ALAPPUZHA: The development of basic facilities and infrastructure alone will not help the agriculture sector in Kerala propel itself out of the crisis that it is in, State Planning Board vice-chairman Prabhat Patnaik has said. Addressing a seminar organised by the Kerala Karshaka Sanghom in connection with the 50th anniversary of the first elected Communist Government at Kalarcode near here on Wednesday, Mr. Patnaik said the agrarian crisis should be seen as a social problem and that remedial steps should be taken accordingly. Remarking that the Centre did not have a proper perspective of the crisis, he said the steps like the Vidarbha Package were not the solution, proof of which was that farmers were still resorting to extreme steps like suicide inVidarbha.
