Anup Sridhar advances

New Delhi: Indian shuttlers had a disappointing day at the Asian badminton championships in Johar Baru, Malaysia, on Thursday, with most of them bowing out of the competition in various categories.

Anup Sridhar was the lone winner, beating Poompat Sapkulchananart of Thailand 23-21, 21-14 in the second round of men's singles. Sridhar next faces Hsieh Yu Hsing of Chinese Taipei in the pre-quarterfinals.

Ravinder Singh and Anand Pawar also saw their campaign in the singles come to an end. While Ravinder surrendered meekly 10-21, 14-21 to Chan Yan Kit of Hong Kong, Pawar lost to Chen Hong 11-21, 13-21.

The biggest jolt came in the form of Saina Nehwal's defeat who put up a spirited fight before losing to Chinese World No. 10, Jiang Yanjiao, 17-21, 21-19, 14-21.

Trupti Murgunde was easily defeated by Wong Mew Choo of Malaysia 22-20, 21-10.

The pair of V. Diju and Aparna Balan lost its mixed doubles tie 17-21, 16-21 against Xu Chen and Zhao Tingting of China.

Women's singles: Second round: Jiang Yanjiao (Chn) bt Saina Nehwal 21-17, 19-21, 21-14; Wong Mew Choo (Mas) bt Trupti Murgunde 22-20, 21-10. First round: Saina bt Hirayama Yu (Jpn) 21-18, 10-21, 21-15; Eriko Hirose (Jpn) bt Aditi Mutatkar 21-18, 16-21, 21-19.

Mixed doubles: Second round: Xu Chen & Zhao Tingting (Chn) bt V. Diju & Aparna Balan 21-17, 21-16. First round: Diju & Aparna bt Cho Gun Woo & Hong Soo Jung (Kor) 21-7, 21-12. — PTI
