Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee
KOLKATA: The West Bengal Congress will join the Trinamool Congress-led Krishi Jami Raksha Committee here on Friday in observing "Condemnation Day" over the March 14 police firing at Nandigram, which claimed 14 lives. It is, however, yet to decide whether to join the movement led by the committee against the acquisition of farmland for setting up industry, a senior Congress leader said here on Thursday. The Congress leadership distanced itself from the movement ever since the Bharatiya Janata Party lent its support to it. A two-day sit in demonstration organised by the committee in protest against the alleged forcible acquisition of farmland for the Tata Motors' car manufacturing project at Singur entered its second day. Farmers' representatives, participating in the demonstration, met State Governor Gopalkrishna Gandhi and alleged that their land was acquired for the project without their consent. They were accompanied by senior Trinamool leader Partha Chatterjee. Later, they told newspersons that they would not give their consent to their plots being acquired by the authorities for the project and would also refuse the offer of compensation. Trinamool leader Mamata Banerjee, who has renewed her campaign against the project, is scheduled to address a rally at Singur on April 20.
