Four girls drowned in village pond

NILAMBUR: Four girls drowned in a village pond at Balamkulam in Moothedam panchayat near here on Thursday. The girls were bathing in the pond when the tragedy struck. The deceased were identified as Ajita, 10, daughter of Nalachandran Puthenveettil; Laila, 10, daughter of Azeez Puthiyathu; Anju, 9, daughter of Chandran Karimbancheri; and Vidya, 11, daughter of Biju Kizhakkemuttathu.The bodies were found after a search for the missing girls. The pond was searched on basis of suspicion that Laila had left her home to take a bath. It is believed that the girls drowned while trying to save one of them who slipped into the pond while bathing on the steps. Vidya and Ajita were cousins. Vidya had come to Ajita's house to celebrate Vishu. The bodies of the girls were kept at the Balamkulam Madrassa for the public to pay their homage. The funeral took place in the evening. - Staff Reporter

KSHB Chairman hurt in accident

KOLLAM: M. Rahmathulla, Chairman of the Kerala State Housing Board (KSHB), was injured when the car in which he was travelling collided with a lorry on the National Highway at Ithikara on Thursday afternoon. The driver of the car escaped unhurt. Mr. Rahmathulla was taken to a nearby hospital for preliminary treatment. Doctors who attended on him said he was out of danger. His shoulder bone and arm were fractured. Mr. Rahmathulla was, later, taken to Thiruvananthapuram for further treatment. He was on his way to Manjeri at the time of the accident. The lorry was loaded with sand. The Kottiyam police registered a case. — Staff Reporter

New chief of AEC

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Major General S.S. Nair, an officer of 33 years of distinguished service in the Army, has taken over as head of the Army Educational Corps (AEC) at the Army headquarters in Delhi. He will be responsible for the direction supervision and coordination of all educational training activities in the Army which includes training in foreign languages, map reading, military music and series of other trainers training and human resource development activities. Born at Peyad here he did his college education at the University College and the University Department of Politics, Karyavattom. — Special Correspondent

Contractors' demand

KOZHIKODE: Contractors who have taken up works of the Public Works Department (PWD) and the Irrigation Department have demanded that the Government pay the arrears due to them with immediate effect. Secretary of the Kozhikode District Committee of the All-Kerala Government Contractors' Association has said that a sum of more than Rs.750 crore was due to contractors for taking up different public works for the Government. — Staff Reporter

BSNL scheme

PALAKKAD: BSNL has launched a discount scheme for ex-customers (defaulters) under Basic\WLL\Mobile Services for clearance of their outstanding telephone\mobile dues, with immediate effect up to September 3, 2007.

A BSNL press release issued here on Thursday said customers whose telephones were under disconnection for more than two years would be reconnected on payment of dues with attractive discount.

Those who wanted to get this facility can contact the Accounts Officer (TRII) on telephone number (0491-250 2733). Those who do not want reconnection will also be given the benefit of discount, the release said. — Staff Reporter

19 injured in blast

MALAPPURAM: Nineteen people, including five policemen, were injured in a blast while defusing explosives at Pullamparambu in Edayur panchayat on Thursday afternoon. Seven persons had been killed in a blast at a fireworks manufacturing unit there on March 31.

Thursday's explosion took place while the police were defusing the explosives that had not been destroyed in the March 31 blast. Four of the injured suffered serious wounds and were admitted to Al-Shifa and Moulana Hospitals at Perinthalmanna. The other injured were treated at Nadakkavil Hospital at Valanchery.
