Shivalingamurthy takes charge as DC

Belgaum: M.E. Shivalingamurthy has assumed charge as the Deputy Commissioner of Belgaum following the transfer of Shalini Rajneesh. Mr. Murthy was serving as Chief Executive Officer of Belguam Zilla Panchayat till Thursday. The transfer of charge took place at a formal function attended by some officials on Thursday evening.

Ambedkar Jayanti celebration

Belgaum: The district administration, the zilla panchayat and the Department of Social Welfare will jointly mark Ambedkar Jayanti here on April 14. According to an official announcement here on Thursday, a function will be held on Ambedkar Garden premises. Minister for Horticulture and district in-charge Shashikant A. Naik will inaugurate and Ramesh L. Kudachi, MLA, will preside over the function. The district administration has banned sale of alcohol for 30 hours commencing from midnight of April 13 till 6 a.m. on April 15.

Rise in price of milk

BELGAUM: The District Federation of Milk Producers' Cooperative Societies has announced an increase of Rs. 1.25 in the procurement price of white milk (buffalo milk). The price of one litre of milk has been increased to Rs. 13.25 (for milk with 6 per cent fat and 9.0 SNF). The increase in the price came into effect on April 11.

Felicitation

Belgaum: Advocate B.L. Patil, who is also a social worker fighting to eradicate the Devadasi system, will be felicitated on the occasion of his 60th birthday at a function in his home town Athani on April 15. The felicitation will be held in the presence of Shri Siddeshwar Swami.

Rain in Bellary

BELLARY: Bellary city and surrounding areas experienced rains on Thursday. This is for the first time this year that the showers lasted for over 40 minutes and was a welcome change as it was able to bring down the temperature considerably.

Every year, the temperature during the day ranges between 36 and 39 degrees Celsius from the month of January onwards and crosses 40 degree Celsius during the months of April and May, when summer is at its peak. The temperature has forced all Government offices here to function between 8.30 a.m. and 1.30 p.m. during the months of April and May. — Staff Correspondent

Four killed

BIJAPUR: Four members of a family were killed and two others were severely injured in a road mishap near Lokapur in Mudhol taluk of Bagalkot district on Wednesday.

The accident took place when their car fell into a roadside ditch. The police have identified the victims as Nalinikanth Gujjar (70), a merchant from Bagalkot, his wife Shobha (64), daughter-in-law Preethi (29) and granddaughter Akshara (7). Nikesh Nalinikanth Gujjar (32) and his son Kunja (2), who suffered multiple fractures, have been admitted to a private hospital in Bagalkot. The family had been on their way back to Bagalkot after visiting Mahalakshmi Mandir, a famous temple in Kolhapur, Maharashtra.

Hailstorm

BIJAPUR: Thundershowers accompanied by a hailstorm, which lashed part of Sindagi taluk on Wednesday, killed two persons and at least 14 of their cattle. The victims were identified as Guravva Makonda (52) and Bheemaray Makonda (48) of Algur village. Sindagi tahsildar Chinwar visited the village. — Staff Correspondent

Road accident

Raichur: A person was killed on the spot and another was injured when their motorcycle was hit by a lorry coming from the opposite direction on State Highway 20 near Yermarus village, 5 km from Raichur, on Wednesday.

The police have identified the victim as Ramesh (44) and the injured person as Govinda. The Raichur Rural police have registered a case. — Staff Correspondent

Woman dies

Raichur: Maramma (55) died on the spot when she suffered a head injury after she was knocked down to the ground during a scuffle between women in front of a Public Distribution System (PDS) outlet at LBS Locality in Raichur city on Wednesday. Khajamunni, an accused in the incident, was arrested and remanded in judicial custody. The Market Yard police have registered a case. — Staff Correspondent

Court frowns on adjournments

BANGALORE: The Karnataka High Court on Wednesday came down on parties seeking adjournment in a lower court in Bangalore and said repeated adjournments amounted to contempt.

A Division Bench comprising Justice S.R. Bannurmath and Justice A.S. Bopanna passed the order while dealing with an appeal that had arisen from a lower court order. The Bench also frowned upon an interlocutory application by the applicant and levied costs. — Staff Reporter

Registration fee hiked

BANGALORE: The Government has decided to hike life registration fee of practitioners of Ayurvedic, Naturopathy, Sidda, Unani and Yoga from Rs. 300 to Rs. 750 and renewal fee from Rs. 20 to Rs. 50.

To increase the fee, the Legislative Assembly on Thursday passed the Karnataka Ayurvedic, Naturopathy, Sidda, Unani and Yoga Practitioners Registration and Medical Practitioners Miscellaneous Provisions (Amendment) Bill, 2007. — Special Correspondent

`Abolish VAT on tobacco'

Bangalore: Congress members M. Mallikarjun Kharge, Prakash Hukkeri and Kakasaheb P. Patil on Thursday demanded in the Legislative Assembly that the 12.5 per cent VAT on tobacco be abolished as the growers were in dire straits.

Chief Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy assured them that he would consult Deputy Chief Minister B.S. Yediyurappa and officials of the Finance Department. — Staff Reporter

Counselling put off

Bangalore: The Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences (RGUHS) has postponed the counselling for in-service quota for admission to postgraduate medical and dental courses, for the academic year 2007-08. The seat selection process was earlier scheduled for April 13.

The revised date of counselling would be notified later, a university release said.

The PG medical counselling 2007 for entrance quota candidates concluded at the university campus here on Thursday. All the 328 seats available under the entrance quota were allotted to candidates according to merit. — Staff Reporter

Rain in Tumkur

TUMKUR: There were showers in Tumkur district on Thursday.

According to the police, lightning struck the house of Narase Gowda, a farmer in Appasandra in the district, resulting in a fire in the first floor.

Showers bring relief from heat

MADIKERI: The soaring mercury level plummeted in Madikeri following showers on Thursday. Some localities reported moderate rain while others experienced a drizzle, bringing relief to people who have been reeling under a heat spell in the last couple of months.

Many other parts of Kodagu such as Napoklu, Ballamavati, Nelaji have reported rain in the last few days. — Staff Correspondent
