Tsunami-hit seek better facilities

Nagercoil: The Kanyakumari Resource and Research Centre (KRRC), a liaison body between the Government, various non-governmental organisations and the other stakeholders involved in tsunami rehabilitation, has urged the district administration to ensure enough time for people to register their grievances.

A resolution to this effect was unanimously passed at the State-level stocktaking consultation meeting held here on Thursday.

Before finalising the beneficiaries for the housing schemes in the coastal villages on April 16 in the special Grama Sabha, the local village rehabilitation committees and the community-based structures should be consulted and the list of beneficiaries should be prominently displayed.

The forum requested the Government and the district administration to ensure that three cents of land be provided to each house, in addition to the lands for community infrastructures.

It urged the Government to provide adequate infrastructure and other basic facilities to 2,900 houses, which had already been constructed by the NGOs for the benefit of tsunami-affected fishermen.

It demanded that the Government should withdraw the G.O. restricting 1.5 cents area land for housing in the coastal villages and ensure the quality of access to land.
