From tension to elation

Y. Mallikarjun

HYDERABAD: It was a tense atmosphere in the Mission Control Room on the Wheeler Island on Thursday morning as the countdown began for the second flight trial of the long-range missile.

However, the mood changed to elation and all-round jubilation as soon as the missile lifted off without glitch, followed the pre-designated flight path and the final payload re-entry vehicle impacted the target with high precision.

Talking to The Hindu after the successful launch of the longest range Indian missile, Agni-III programme director Avinash Chander said the scientists spent tense moments although they were "always confident of the system and its capability." Everyone was thrilled once it took off successfully as "our effort of the last nine months was validated".
