Antique coins seized by the Customs in the Chennai airport.
CHENNAI: Officials of the Air Intelligence Unit of Customs at the airport here intercepted a Speed Post parcel and seized 12 antique coins. C. Rajan, Commissioner of Customs (Airport), said the parcel was to be airlifted by Singapore Airlines. One Bondayes of Nagercoil booked the parcel last Saturday. It was addressed to a person in Japan. Preliminary investigation revealed that the coins, with Arabic words inscribed, could be 400 years old, dating back to the Moghul period. The export of coins with antique value has been prohibited. The person had not declared the contents of the parcel to the postal authorities. Mr. Rajan said the confiscated coins would be sent to the Customs Museum in Goa.
Two gold bars seized
A passenger from Colombo was found on Wednesday carrying two gold bars in his rectum. Customs officials said Hasan Mubarak of Tondi in Ramanathapuram district went to Colombo and returned to Chennai the next day, raising suspicion among officials. He ejected the bars voluntarily. The bars, bearing foreign markings and wrapped in a black-coloured cello tape, were weighing 233 grams and worth Rs 2.2 lakh. He was remanded.
