State plans mission on poverty
Special Correspondent
HYDERABAD:
The State Government is contemplating creation of a mission for elimination of extreme poverty in municipal areas (MEPMA) on the lines of Society for Elimination of Rural Poverty (SERP).
The proposal has come from the Municipal Administration and Urban Development Department following a directive from Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, according to a press release from the Chief Minister's Office here. Dr. Reddy was reviewing `Pavala vaddi' programme on Thursday.
The scheme is aimed at involving all below poverty line (BPL) households in the urban areas in SHG activity providing them bank linkages. A senior IAS official will be made mission Director soon. District project management units (DPMUs) will be created on the lines of DRDAs with Collectors as chairmen. The apex body will have Chief Minister as chairman with 25 members and two functional specialists and 23 DPMUs with support staff. A road map has been drawn for the programme and a G.O. in this regard is expected on April 20.
