BANGALORE: The Pre-University Department is keeping its fingers crossed, expecting that the new 148 government PU colleges would attract more students at least in the next academic year. Only eight of these colleges have reportedly managed to admit 100 students, the maximum strength for a class. The department had an explanation for the poor turnout of students. Commissioner for Pre-University Education S.G. Hegde told The Hindu on Wednesday that some of the colleges were sanctioned only in August last year, too late for students to get admitted. By then, many candidates had opted for nearby colleges. But despite the poor intake, the Government was expected to sanction some more colleges to realise its plan of setting up a PU college for every taluk. According to Mr. Hegde, the department had deferred opening more colleges because it was too late for the last academic year. Besides, a 100 more colleges were in the pipeline with Deputy Chief Minister B.S. Yediyurappa making an announcement to this effect in his budget presentation. To avoid a repeat of last year's poor intake, the department was expected to give more publicity.
