Garment factory workers block Mysore Road

BANGALORE: Tension prevailed near Kengeri Checkpost on Mysore Road on Thursday morning after an employee was fatally knocked down by a maxi-cab belonging to a garment factory.

Gayathri (20), working for Bombay Rayons, died when she was on her way to work. Enraged by the death, fellow workers held a protest demanding compensation.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (West) K.V. Sharatchandra told The Hindu that the workers, infuriated over the manager's compensation offer of Rs. 5,000, blocked Mysore Road, affecting traffic for some time.

The management later took a decision to offer a compensation of Rs. 1 lakh to Gayathri's family following which the workers called off their agitation, the police said.

Children sustain burns

Two children sustained burns after they came in contact with a livewire in a ground near Appao Pillai School in Chickbazar of Shivajinagar police station limits on Thursday afternoon.

Roopa (7), daughter of construction workers Gayatri and Antony, was playing with her relative Pravin (4) in the ground while her parents were having lunch. Roopa and Pravin came in contact with a livewire of a transformer and suffered electric shock. They were admitted to Victoria Hospital. The condition of Gayatri was said to be critical, the police said.

Killed in accident

A water tanker knocked down a pedestrian in Kamakshipalya Traffic police station limits on Wednesday night. The police gave the name of the victim as Jayanna (30), a mechanic in a garage. The accident occurred near Sunkadakatte.

A motorcycle rider was killed on the spot when a truck hit his vehicle in Banaswadi Traffic Police Station limits on Wednesday. The police gave the name of the victim as M. Karthik. The incident occurred near Hennur junction, police said.

Murdered

A painter was done to death allegedly by his stepson who was annoyed at being asked to get himself a job in Shivajinagar Police Station limits on Wednesday night.

The police gave the name of the victim as Dayanand (42), a resident of C. Cross, Broadway Street. Dayanand's wife Savitramma, working as a pourakarmika, married him after the death of her first husband. She had a son Sunil (20) from the first husband.

Dayanand had been asking Sunil to earn his livelihood, which the latter did not like.

Sunil allegedly smashed the head of a sleeping Dayanand with a stone on Wednesday night. Shivajinagar police have registered a case of murder and are investigating.

Arrested

The Central Crime Branch (CCB) police arrested one person on charge of cheating a mining company and recovered three cars, a mini truck and steel bars worth Rs. 1 lakh.

According to the police, Mustaque, Iqbal Ahmed and Mustaque Ali issued bogus cheques after purchasing steel worth Rs. 20 lakh posing themselves as partners of Metro Steel Traders to HKT Mining Company Pvt., Ltd. Mining company's marketing manager Chandrashekhar had lodged a complaint with the police in this regard.

The CCB police traced Mustaque in Chennai and recovered goods from the godown.

Godown owner Javid and the two other accused are still at large, the police said.
