AMIDST FILTH: Garbage lies uncleared at Ambedkar Nagar at Narayana Valasu. PHOTO: M. Govarthan
ERODE: Ambedkar Nagar at Narayana Valasu, under Veerappan Chatram Municipal limits, needs no introduction. It is not that it is a popular locality or posh residential area. It is just unique in a sense. The locality of 256 flats in 16 Tamil Nadu Housing Board tenements needs no signboard. The very stench emanating from the full-to-brim septic tanks and garbage pile will suffice. For, the residents, most of who belong to the Scheduled Castes, say the conservancy staff from the Municipality do not clean the tanks. They claim that in the past 12 years of locality coming up the tanks have been cleaned only twice. And, it shows. The tanks leak and so does the choke pit that collects sewage from the flats before letting it into the tank. In some flats on the ground floor, the chocked pits push the water in the reverse direction, towards the houses, forcing residents to evacuate very often. Adding to the woes is garbage, which the residents allege is cleaned only once in a month. There is garbage everywhere. Vijaya, a resident, says their repeated pleas to the civic body have been futile. She says the garbage should be cleaned at least once a week, and the tanks emptied at least once in a year.
