KATHMANDU: The Election Commission of Nepal has said it cannot hold the Constituent Assembly election on June 20 as decided by the ruling eight-party coalition. Addressing a press conference on Friday, Chief Election Commissioner Bhoj Raj Pokharel said, "Given the current situation, free and fair Constituent Assembly polls can't be conducted on June 20." He said the commission had sent a letter to the Government stating that it needs at least 110 days to conduct the polls after the completion of all election-related legal processes. The interim Parliament is yet to pass the Constituent Assembly election-related bills. In the letter, the commission urged the Government to pass all election-related laws and declare a suitable date for the polls. Following the commission statement, the Cabinet held an emergency meeting to discuss the situation.
