Justice P. Sathasivam
CHENNAI: Justice P. Sathasivam, the seniormost Judge of the Madras High Court, has been transferred to the Punjab and Haryana High Court. A communication received from the Union Ministry of Law and Justice said on Friday that he should assume office at Chandigarh on or before April 25. The Madras High Court has planned a farewell on April 16. He is likely to take oath in Punjab and Haryana High Court on April 20. Appointed Additional Judge of the Madras High Court on January 8, 1996, Mr. Justice Sathasivam held various posts as law officer, including Government Pleader of Tamil Nadu, prior to his elevation. He is credited with several major decisions involving motor vehicle taxation, entry tax on vehicles from other States, land acquisition and mines and mineral matters. A Division Bench headed by him even wiped out pendency in habeas corpus cases. During his tenure as Judge in the Madras High Court, Mr. Justice Sathasivam handled cases in almost all portfolios, including criminal appeals, tax matters and writs. With his transfer, the sitting strength of the Madras High Court has come down to 45, as against the sanctioned strength of 49.
