Gulf dreams turn sour

A Correspondent

NEDUMBASSERY: A 38-year-old woman who had gone to Sharjah to work as a housemaid arrived at the Cochin International Airport on Thursday after she escaped a flesh trade racket.

Hailing from Mattanchery, she had gone to Sharjah in November last on a visa secured by paying Rs.30,000 to a Palluruthy-based agent.

According to airport sources, the woman was beaten up and tortured for resisting the demands of the alleged racketeers. Her passport was seized and she was asked to pay Rs.1 lakh.

According to her, there were five other women from Sri Lanka and Indonesia, besides Malayali women from Malappuram and Chavakkad, facing a similar problem.

She escaped after a cab driver, who was entrusted to transport her, let her flee on hearing about her predicament. Eventually, she approached the Indian Embassy. As she did not have a passport, the embassy sent her back home on an emergency certificate.
