Warne comes to Vaughan's rescue

Melbourne: Under-fire England captain Michael Vaughan has found unlikely support in Aussie spin legend Shane Warne, who feels the right-hander is the best person to lead the embattled side.

England has so far failed to impress in the ongoing World Cup and has limped to victory even against minnows like Bangladesh and Ireland.

The miserable display has led to severe pressure on Vaughan, with some former players asking him to step down as captain.

Vaughan's poor form has not helped his cause either and questions are being raised about his place in the side, having never scored an ODI hundred in his career.

However, Warne felt despite the current slump, England should stick to Vaughan as he is the best it has. ``Michael Vaughan is the best England captain. As captain you have to make sure your place in the team is safe, and he's only averaging 26 in one-dayers,'' he said.

``He's never made a one-day international century and maybe he should bat lower down the order,'' the former Ashes rival added. — PTI
