`System works against Dalits'

Special Correspondent

Bangalore: Though there is no dearth of laws in India to protect the rights of Dalits, the system has always worked against their interest, State Janata Dal (U) president B. Somashekar has said.

Speaking at a function organised by the party to mark the 116th Ambedkar Jayanti celebrations, he said Dalits had not been able to assert their constitutional rights.

The Congress held Ambedkar Jayanti celebrations at the party office, presided over by State party president M. Mallikarjun Kharge. Speaking to reporters after the event, Mr. Kharge said the coalition government had been postponing the urban local body elections because of the fear of losing.

At another function at the Samajwadi Party office, State party president and former Chief Minister S. Bangarappa predicted that the coalition government would fall after the urban local body elections. The BJP's Vikas Yatra, he said, was an attempt to prepare the ground for mid-term Assembly elections.
