NEW DELHI: If it has been a challenge for the police to arrest Bunty, then keeping him behind bars is no mean task either. Known for his presence of mind and cool temperament, the "Super thief'' has outsmarted the police on four occasions and escaped from its custody.

"In 1993, when he was arrested in New Delhi, he had managed to escape from the office of the Special Staff. Subsequently he was arrested in Chennai. However, he consumed some glass pieces in the lock-up and was admitted to a government hospital. He managed to lay his hands on a disposable syringe in the hospital with which he opened handcuffs and escaped," said Deputy Commissioner of Police (South Delhi) Anil Shukla at a Press conference here on Saturday, adding that Bunty's escapes from police custody were as interesting as his methods of committing crime.

About 20 days later, he was arrested by the Chandigarh police. But he drove away in a scooter of a sub-inspector and later committed burglary in the house of a prominent personality of the city. He abandoned the scooter there and made off with expensive household articles and a Maruti Esteem.

He continued to play hide-and-seek with the police in several States for several months and was arrested in Bangalore while disposing of stolen goods. Later, he was transferred to Chandigarh.

After his trial was over in Chandigarh, he was lodged in Belgaon jail and was released on November 30, 2000.

"He was again arrested by the South Delhi police on April 26, 2002, and a special request was made to the court to allow them to put shackles around his ankles to prevent him from escaping. And it worked. He completed his full term in jail and was released on October 5, 2006," said Mr. Shukla. The police have got his medical examination done to forestall any attempt by him to prove himself of "unstable mind".
