Elections for JNU councillors announced

Staff Reporter

NEW DELHI: Elections for the post of a councillor each in Jawaharlal Nehru University's School of Social Sciences and School of International Studies will be held this coming Thursday.

Though the JNU Students' Union polls were held last year, there was, perhaps for the first time in the history of students' elections on the campus, a tie for these posts. The tie was between All-India Students' Association (AISA) and Students' Federation of India (SFI), but now all outfits can participate in the elections.

"The last date for filing the nomination is Sunday. Elections will be held on Thursday and the counting will begin the same day once the polls are over," said Netajee Abhinandan, chairperson of the JNU Students' Union Election Committee.

The elections are being seen on the campus as the student community's referendum on the issues of Special Economic Zones-related violence in Nandigram and Singur and reservation for the Other Backward Classes. Results of the elections for the post of convenors of eight cultural clubs at JNU have been announced. The AISA clinched five posts, while the SFI has won three.
