Uphold prestige of judiciary, lawyers told

Correspondent

CUTTACK: The tension between the Legislature and the Judiciary came to the fore here on Saturday when the Union Law Minister and a senior Judge of the Supreme Court gave vent to their feelings.

Minister H R Bhardwaj and Justice Arijit Pasayat spoke at a national seminar here. While Mr. Bhardwaj warned of the catastrophic effect likely to follow if the judiciary crossed its "Laxman Rekha", Justice Pasayat asserted that "Laxman Rekha" needed to be crossed to destroy the evils like Ravana on the other side.

Mr. Bhardwaj said the Constitution had not given autocratic or full power to any single wing of democracy. The CJI limited his speech to calling upon the legal fraternity to rise to the occasion. Justice Balakrishnan asked lawyers to uphold the prestige of the judiciary.

The contribution of the judiciary for the country should be on a par with other wings of democracy, he said.
