Child runs for world peace

Staff Reporter

THINKING BIG: Mrutyunjaya Mandal passing through Berhampur on Saturday.

BERHAMPUR: Famous child marathon runner of the city, Mrutyunjay Mandal, ran a distance of around 20 km from Sankat Mochan temple in the city to Mahuri Kalua temple for world peace and Mahavishuv Sankranti on Saturday morning.

He was flagged off by Union Minister of State for Rural Development, Chandrasekhar Sahu in the presence of local MLA R. C. C. Patnaik.

According to Mrutyunjay, he had to reduce the distance of his run this year due to restrictions of the Central Government on long distance running by child marathon runners.

On Mahavishuv Sankranti day last year Mrutyunjay had ran a distance of 70 km from Ujaleswar temple near Ghodahada dam to Paschimeswar temple in the city in around five hours.

He has run long stretches of more than 30 km in various parts of the State. Last year he had ran more than 60 km at a stretch in an event in Mumbai.

He now studies in class IV at the Ankuli upper primary school. His father, Padmalochan Mandal, a private ayurvedic practitioner, said he wanted to keep alive the practice of his son and make him an international marathon runner in future.

Every morning he practices at the Khallikote College stadium by running around 20 km to fulfil his dream.
