CHENNAI: Tucked away in a corner of Appaswamy Street, Chetpet, Hutton Free Night School, which celebrated its platinum jubilee on Friday, has been catering for underprivileged children for 75 years now.

Union Minister of State for Statistics G.K. Vasan, who released the platinum jubilee souvenir at the function held at the school, interacted with the students.

The school, run by Chetpet Recreation Union, now provides free education to about 90 children in the neighbourhood.

Chetpet Recreation Union President K. Vasudevan said eight honorary teachers taught students from Standard I to VII in the school. The union, which was earlier involved in sports programmes too, restricted its activities to education and maintenance of the school. This was primarily on account of inadequate funds available with the union, which had some 40 members.

A few members of the union sought concessions in the power tariff and property tax levied on the school. A former student of the school and recipient of "The Right to Livelihood Award" given by Swedish Government D. Ruth Manorama participated.
