DHARMASTHALA: Needs and aspirations of the poor and the deprived can be met only when the public administration becomes people-oriented with a focus on the welfare of common man, Vice-President Bhairon Singh Shekhawat said here on Saturday.

He was speaking after inaugurating the silver jubilee celebrations of Sri Kshetra Dharmasthala Rural Development Project (SKDRDP).

"Reforms in public governance are fundamental to any strategy towards alleviation of poverty," he said. Public programmes aimed at ameliorating the conditions of the poor ought to be effectively implemented to benefit targeted beneficiaries.

"Corruption tends to create maladministration and in the process, the concerns and priority of the poor get relegated to the background."

He said that the SKDRDP had earned a distinction for its focus on the poor and the marginalised sections.

It was a success story of voluntary initiative that had contributed for the development of the region besides empowering the poor and the marginalised sections. The project was a shining example of selfless social service for rural regeneration and community development, he said.

Mr. Shekhawat launched three silver jubilee commemoration projects of the SKDRDP. They are: "Navachethana", a fund to support the schools and centres for differently abled children, "Kamadhenu", a cattle research centre, and "Sujnananidhi", a scholarship scheme for the children of the SKDRDP stakeholders to pursue technical and medical education.

The first assistance under Navachethana project was given to Manasa Training and Rehabilitation Centre, Udupi.

The Vice-President gave away the scholarship under Sujnananidhi project to Ashok, a student of Vivekananda Engineering College, Puttur. He is the son of Sesappa, a stakeholder of the SKDRDP.

T.N. Chaturvedi, Governor, said that the SKDRDP focused on the uplift of the poorest of the poor. The activities of the project had brought transformation in society, he said.

The Governor released a souvenir.

D. Veerendra Heggade, president of the SKDRDP, said that the project had promoted 45,750 self-help groups.

M.V. Rajasekharan, Union Minister of State for Planning; B. Nagaraj Shetty, Minister for Fisheries and Endowment; D.C. Srikantappa, MP; and K. Prabhakar Bangera, MLA, were present.
