HYDERABAD: S.K.Vasal, a distinguished maize scientist from Mexico, who chaired the 50th annual maize workshop at Acharya N.G. Ranga Agricultural University here on Saturday, appreciated the efforts made by scientists in the country to increase the maize production. He emphasised the importance of developing germ plasma for enhancing the productivity of inbred lines of new hybrids.
Hybrids
S.P.Tiwari, Director-General, Indian Council of Agricultural Research, who inaugurated the workshop, said the per-hectare maize productivity could be raised from 2,000 kg by releasing suitable hybrids. N.D. Jambhale, Assistant Director-General, ICAR, advised scientists to concentrate mainly on two parental hybrids because of easy seed production and maintenance. Sain Dass, Project Director, Directorate of Maize Research, New Delhi, and S. Raghu Vardhan Reddy, Vice-Chancellor of the university, spoke. Two hundred and fifty scientists from maize research stations across the country, ICAR institutions and representatives of several private companies attended the workshop. Books published by the university on maize were released, a press release said.
