Woman sets herself ablaze

A neighbour is said to have chided her

BANGALORE: A woman committed suicide by immolating herself at her house in Basaveshwaranagar police station limits on Friday night after she was allegedly abused and humiliated by her neighbour.

The police said the victim Pushpa (30) and her husband owned a grocery shop in Manjunathnagar.

A girl from the neighbourhood, Kalpana, used to call her boyfriend daily from a coin telephone booth at Pushpa's shop.

Kalpana reportedly eloped with her boyfriend on Thursday after taking gold and diamond jewellery from her house. Kalpana's parents, Shanmugam and Kuppamma, allegedly abused Pushpa in public for not tipping them off about their daughter calling her boyfriend.

A mortified Pushpa doused herself with kerosene and set herself on fire at her house, the police said. On a complaint by her husband, the Basaveshwaranagar police have registered a case.

Chains snatched

Motorcycle-borne men robbed two women of their gold chains, together worth Rs. 65,000, in separate incidents in the city on Friday night. The police said two men came on a motorcycle and snatched a gold chain worth Rs. 25,000 from Vasudha (52) while she was walking on 13th Cross, Malleswaram. The Malleswaram police have registered a case.

In the other incident, two motorists snatched a chain worth Rs. 40,000 from Muniyamma at HRBR Layout in Kalyananagar.

The Banaswadi police have registered a case.

Man robbed

Two motorists waylaid Karthik, a life insurance agent, near Vijayanagar railway gate on Friday night and robbed him of a gold chain and a wristwatch, together worth Rs. 10,000, after threatening him with a knife. On a complaint by Karthik, the Jnana Bharathi police have registered a case.

Laptops recovered

The South Division police, with the assistance of fingerprint experts, arrested Srinivasa alias Seena (26) of Bakshi Garden on charges of theft and recovered 20 laptops, other electronic goods and gold ornaments, together worth Rs. 10 lakh.

The police said Srinivasa, who worked as a labourer at vegetable and fruit shops in K.R. Market, had smashed the glass panes of cars and stolen the laptops. With his arrest, the police have solved 20 theft cases reported from Koramangala and two from HAL police station limits. The police said they were able to arrest Srinivasa on the basis of the fingerprints provided by the Fingerprints Bureau.
