National anthem

This refers to the controversy surrounding Infosys chief mentor N.R. Narayana Murthy's comment on the national anthem. His position that singing the national anthem would have embarrassed employees of foreign origin is difficult to comprehend. Such comments by people like Mr. Murthy, who are role models, are unfortunate. Political leaders and people have rightly raised their voice against him.

It is unfortunate that a statement made inadvertently created unnecessary controversy. Mr. Murthy's apology should be accepted and the matter closed. After celebrations on Independence Day and Republic Day, we find national flags strewn all over the streets. We must do something about such things instead of raising a hue and cry over non-issues.

Mr. Murthy has built an institution that provides employment to thousands of people all over the country in addition to earning a huge amount of foreign exchange. In contrast, what are the credentials of his detractors? At best they can claim to have organised several bandhs bringing untold misery to the common man, and causing a loss of crores of rupees to the nation.

Thanks to pseudo-nationalists, even Sachin Tendulkar and Narayana Murthy are deemed unpatriotic. Many of us do not even know the lyrics of the national anthem. It would be interesting to carry out a study on the question and include politicians. For god's sake, let us not treat thus men who are the pride of India.
