Small industries association's plan for economically weaker women

TIRUCHI: Realising the growing demand for imitation jewellery and to facilitate income-generation activity for economically weaker women, the Tiruchi District Tiny and Small Scale Industries Association - Science and Technology Entrepreneurship Development (TIDITSSIA-STED) will set up 100 units in various parts of the district during the current financial year.

Stating this at a meeting of women entrepreneurs convened jointly by the TIDITSSIA-STED, the Mahalir Thittam and the Tamil Nadu Women Entrepreneurs Association here on Monday, its Project Director C. Ramaswamy Desai said that a total of 30 beneficiaries had already been selected for the trade. Although one machine worth about Rs.30,000 would suffice the manufacturing process, each beneficiary would purchase a couple of machines through bank loans. The second machine would be a stand-by arrangement for sustained production.

The Co-ordinator, Hi-Tech Imitation Jewellery Industries, Tiruchi, and the resource person, K. P. Rajendran, said that the imitation jewellery industry found it difficult to meet the growing demand He would not only supply the material to the entrepreneurs but also procure the end-product, providing an assured marketability.

The initial training would focus on producing chains and it had been planned to make bangles in due course of time.

Explaining the viability of the trade, the Assistant Project Officer, Mahalir Thittam, G. Ravindran, said that the Tamil Nadu Corporation for Development of Women had directed the officials to promote the production of imitation jewellery. Women entrepreneurs could make the most of their leisure at home for making the jewellery.

The vice chairman, TIDITSSIA-STED, S. Abdul Rasheed, gave details about various projects, including the micro-machine shop, and the making of leather garments.
