MYSORE: The Farmers, Workers and Labourers' Action Committee will stage a demonstration outside the Deputy Commissioner's office here on April 18 to demand that steps be taken to control the soaring prices of essential commodities. Activists representing a host of organisations, including the Centre for Indian Trade Union (CITU), BSNL Employees' Union, Prantha Raitha Sangha, All-India Insurance Employees' Association (AIIEA) and the Postal Employees' Association will participate in the demonstration that will begin at 11 a.m. on April 18. Addressing a press conference here on Monday, AIIEA Mysore district leader Vijaykumar said Union Government and the State Government should take steps to control spiralling price rise, which has hit the poor people. The Public Distribution System (PDS) should be strengthened and expanded to ensure that foodgrains were available at a subsidised rate to the poor. The committee blamed the anti-people policies pursued by the Centre and the State Government for problems of the poor. With the pro-globalisation policies of the Government creating a crisis in the industrial and agricultural sector, Mr. Vijaykumar said industrial and agricultural employees were the worst hit. There was a conspiracy to "annihilate" organised employees unions that were hurdles in the path to globalisation, Mr. Vijaykumar said claimed.
