HYDERABAD: The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) came into existence on Monday with the State Government issuing a notification for creation of the 625 sq. km metropolis. All 12 municipalities surrounding the State capital have been merged with the Municipal Corporation of Hyderabad to create the GHMC, which will have a population of 67 lakhs. As a result, the municipalities of L.B. Nagar, Gaddiannaram, Uppal Kalan, Malkajgiri, Kapra, Alwal, Qutbullahpur, Kukatpally, Serilingampalli, Rajendranagar, Ramachandrapuram and Patancheru stand scrapped. The new entity will be headed by a senior officer of the rank of Special Commissioner and the Government has already appointed C. V. S. K. Sarma to the post. The GHMC has been created to ensure improved service delivery in the surrounding areas and better inter-departmental and inter-agency coordination. According to Information Minister Mohd. Shabbir Ali, the GHMC will help reduce the "great difference" in standards of service delivery and ensure that the surrounding areas will grow on a par with core Hyderabad.
Addressing a press conference, Mr. Shabbir said the Government had no plans to impose new taxes.
"The Government has prepared plans for developmental projects costing Rs. 28,000 crores. Several of these projects will be posed to the Centre for assistance from international funding agencies," he said. Japan Bank for International Cooperation had already expressed willingness to fund the underground sewerage project. GHMC would receive 35 per cent funding for its projects under JNNURM. The State would contribute 15 per cent while 50 per cent would be mobilised through the corporation's resources. Mr. Shabbir said Commissioners of the erstwhile municipalities had been re-designated Deputy Commissioners of the GHMC.
