ON DEVELOPMENT: Union Minister of State for Law and Justice S. Venkatapathy (right) at the Public Relations Department pavilion in Erode on Monday.

ERODE: "Women should focus on education and have self-respect," said the Union Minister of State for Law and Justice, S. Venkatapathy, on Monday while participating in the Bharat Nirman Public Information Campaign organised by the Press Information Bureau at Municipal VOC Park, Erode.

The Minister said in Tamil Nadu the illiteracy rate among women was high and the State and the Central Governments had evolved a number of schemes aimed at women's education. He wanted the parents to send their children, especially girls, to school. Referring to the employment opportunities in Tamil Nadu, he said in Erode, Salem, Coimbatore, Tirupur and Nammakal, the scope for employment was very high. But most of the people prefer "white collar jobs" but the number of jobs offered by the Government was restricted.

He wanted the youths to go for self-employment and start small industries for which the banks were advancing loans liberally. He told the borrowers to repay the loans promptly.

Mr. Venkatapathy said the formation of self-help groups in the State had led to economic development of rural areas. He told the Collector and other officials to arrange for the marketing of the products produced by SHG women. The General Manager, District Industries Centre, C.K. Ponnusamy, District Employment Officer O.S. Gnanasekaran, Assistant General Manager, NABARD, S. Srinivasan, Principal of Kongu Arts and Science College, K. Swaminathan, T.N. Palayam Government Girls HSS teacher, Karivaradharajan, District Manager, THADCO, T. Selin Mary and Director of Press Information Bureau C. Muthuvelu and others spoke.
