dated April 18, 1957: The New Union Cabinet

The new Union Council of Ministers led by Mr. Jawaharlal Nehru was announced in New Delhi on April 17 by the President. It consists of 12 Cabinet Ministers, besides Mr. Nehru, 14 Ministers of State and 12 Deputy Ministers. Mr. Lal Bahadur Shastri rejoins the Cabinet as Minister for Transport and Mr. S.K. Patil, the Bombay Congress leader, has been appointed Minister for Irrigation and Power. Mr. V.K. Krishna Menon, Minister without portfolio in the last Cabinet, has been given the Defence portfolio. Among the newcomers are Mr. A.K. Sen, well-known lawyer of Calcutta, who will be Minister of State for Law, Mr. Humayun Kabir, Minister of State in the Ministry of Communications, and Mrs. Violet Alva and Mrs. Lakshmi Menon, who have been appointed Deputy Ministers. Notable omissions from the outgoing Council of Ministers are Rajkumari Amrit Kaur, who was Minister of Health, and Dr. Syed Mahmud, Mr. Mahavir Tyagi, Mr. M.C. Shah and Mr. A.C. Guha, Ministers of State. The following is the list of Cabinet Ministers: Mr. Jawaharlal Nehru - Prime Minister and Minister of External Affairs and also in charge of the Department of Atomic Energy, Maulana Abul Kalam Azad (Education), Mr. Govind Ballabh Pant (Home), Mr. Morarji R. Desai (Commerce and Industry), Mr. Jagjivan Ram (Railways), Mr. Gulzarilal Nanda (Labour and Planning), Mr. T.T. Krishnamachari (Finance), Mr. Lal Bahadur Shastri (Transport and Communications), Sardar Swaran Singh (Steel, Mines and Fuel), Mr. K.C. Reddy (Works, Housing and Supply), Mr. Ajit Prasad Jain (Food and Agriculture), Mr. V.K. Krishna Menon (Defence) and Mr. S.K. Patil (Irrigation and Power).
