Jawan commits suicide

Special Correspondent

NEW DELHI: An Army jawan, recently back from leave, committed suicide at his camp near the Line of Control (LoC) in Jammu and Kashmir on Tuesday morning, said official sources.

R.K. Singh had joined his specialised counter-insurgency battalion only last week.

The suicide takes the distress death toll in the armed forces this year to 22 with the bulk of the cases being reported from the Army. Last year 146 soldiers committed suicide — 120 in the Army, one in the Navy and 24 in the Indian Air Force.

On instructions from Defence Minister A.K. Antony, the armed forces are implementing an action plan to reduce stress among soldiers. Mr. Antony has asked senior officers to be more humane in dealing with men under their command and written to States asking them to compassionately consider civil problems faced by defence personnel.
