NEW DELHI: The Government has upgraded the package for the country's two five star generals Field Marshal Sam Manekshaw and Air Marshal Arjan Singh - "in keeping with the rare honour attached to these ranks," said an official news release here on Tuesday. The new package would take effect from the date of holding of these ranks as a mark of the country's deep appreciation of the invaluable services rendered, added the release.

All service chiefs are of four star rank and only Field Marshal Manekshaw and Air Marshal Arjan Singh were conferred the honorary ranks equivalent to five star generals after retirement. With this decision, the two would be entitled to the same scale of pay as a Chief of the Service, along with special pay. They would also be entitled to residential accommodation and leave travel concession as per rules applicable to the chief of service. Other facilities such as a staff officer, a nominated staff car, medical facilities and an official hospitality allowance would also be made available.
