MADURAI: While Western countries are spending huge sums of money to protect their traditional monuments, only India is ready to spend crores of rupees to destroy the "first man-made construction, Ramar Bridge" (Adam's Bridge), in the Bay of Bengal, said Bharatiya Janata Party State president L. Ganesan on Monday. Speaking at a public meeting organised by the Janata Party to protest against the demolition of Adam's Bridge for the Sethusamudram Ship Channel Project, Mr. Ganesan said references to "Ramar Koil" and "Ramar Palam (bridge)" were found in the land records of the Mughal empire. Claiming that Hindus believed in the "Ramar Bridge," he said: "No one has the right to ask for a certificate [in evidence] of that." The BJP-led National Democratic Government had zeroed in on an alignment that would not disturb any monument, he said, and wondered why Union Shipping Minister T.R. Baalu had chosen an alignment that was a threat to the bridge. Janata Party president Subramanian Swamy said those in power were not bothered by Hindus being affected by terrorism. "No one is willing to raise his voice for the five lakh Hindus driven out of Kashmir." When temples were desecrated in several countries the leaders failed to condemn the act. However, they had been expressing concern for the minorities.
