Six university teachers beaten up in A.P.

Faculty members dragged out of classrooms by group of students

WARANGAL: Six senior faculty members of Physics Department of Kakatiya University were severely beaten up by a group of students reportedly belonging to the ABVP holding them responsible for failure of 14 students here on Tuesday morning.

Faculty members— T. Bhaskar Rao, G. Gangadhar Reddy, A. Ramakanth — received severe blows while K. Suresh Babu, N. Gopi Krishna and Md. Altaf Hussain were also beaten.

Of the 49 students on the campus, 14 failed in M.Sc. (Physics) third semester examination, the results of which were announced on Monday evening. About 50 students reached the Physics Department and dragged out Prof. T. Bhaskar Rao, who was in the class. They abused him and kicked him. Other faculty members G. Gangadhar Reddy and Ramakanth were also dragged and beaten by the mob indiscriminately. Prof. K. Suresh Babu and N. Gopi Krishna, who were just coming into the building, were forced to sit on the road. The injured faculty members were shifted to MGM Hospital for medical examination.

Mr. Gangadhar Reddy said about 100 students came to the building around 10.15 a.m., many of them belonged to various departments and some to the Arts College. They went on ransacking the furniture, sign boards and window panes of classrooms.

The activity on the campus came to a standstill and the teachers on degree spot valuation duties boycotted the work and gathered at the Physics building. Vice-Chancellor V. Gopal Reddy called for an emergency meeting of teaching and non-teaching staff.

The police in large number rushed to the campus, but in vain. The students ran helter skelter and those involved in the activity fled the spot. However, four students reportedly belonging to the ABVP, were taken in custody by the police and cases were registered against them.
