Rahul's remarks

Congress MP Rahul Gandhi, with his ill-informed utterances, including the claim that his family was responsible for dividing Pakistan, is proving to be the enfant terrible of the Congress, besides being the bull in the country's diplomatic china shop.

He may be unstoppable because he is a member of the dynasty but the Congressmen must not forget that if they do not check him he will end up writing their party's epitaph. They owe a duty to themselves and the country to ensure that there is some semblance of informed discourse from one who aspires to lead their party and the country in the years to come.

M. Ramakrishna & M.N. Soudamini,

Rahul's claim that his family divided Pakistan is irresponsible. Even Indira Gandhi did not make the claim; she maintained that she assisted in the birth of Bangladesh. Why does Rahul not talk about the Congress for which he is canvassing instead of harping on the Gandhi family that, among other things, split the Indian National Congress for purely personal reasons?

I congratulate the rising son of the Gandhi-Nehru family on his courage in accepting that his family is responsible for the nation's fate. However there are many things Rahul has forgotten to mention — the Kashmir issue, the Emergency, and the army's entry into the Golden Temple. Since he is a man of courage, I am sure he will talk about all these things in his next speech.

Shirish Mulmuley,

The Congress beacon seems to have acquired his knowledge of history from the paeans of the Nehru family sung by party sycophants. He should realise that there are many people who feel India would have been more democratic and less troubled had it not been for his family. The Congress leadership ought to apologise to the people for his supercilious remarks.

M.T. Venkateswarlu,

Rahul is right in claiming credit for his family — first in Indian politics — for defeating Pakistan in the 1971 war. A hostile neighbour is considerably weakened forever when a part of it is taken away from it.

The BJP is not willing to look at itself before criticising Rahul. Did it not, after the Parliament attack, mobilise troops and make them wait for a whole year for the never-issued orders to cross into the Pakistani territory? Indira Gandhi was not called the Iron Lady without reason.

Lingayath Krishna Rajesh,
Chennai
