Letters to the Editor
Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, undeterred by the criticism of Rahul Gandhi's irresponsible remarks, has gone to the extent of describing his party's crown prince as the leader of the future. It is true that he owes his premiership to a politically sagacious move of Sonia Gandhi but should a man of his repute go this far in competing with others in the party in sycophancy?
S.K. Choudhury,
* * * It is unfortunate that Dr. Singh has joined the ranks of sycophants. At one stroke he has besmirched his reputation.
H.R. Bapu Satyanarayana,
* * * Rahul's utterances are shocking and have created a lot of embarrassment to the nation as well as the Congress. The party feels compelled to defend him as the prince who can do no wrong! The prospect of him leading the country, as stated by our learned Prime Minister, is bewildering!
K. Venkataraman,
* * * It is ridiculous for the Congress that has been claiming to be a secular party to support Rahul's remarks as "facts of history." Senior leaders including Dr. Singh have brought down the image of the party and the Nehru-Gandhi family by supporting him.
* * *
It is good to see that the Pakistan Foreign Office does not want to waste time on the issue. The Congressmen should follow the example and stop tying themselves into knots in their attempts to justify or rationalise what Rahul said. The BJP too should stop extracting political mileage from the statement by harping on what was said in the heat of electioneering.
S. Gurumurthy,
