Lack of quorum holds up proceedings

Special Correspondent

Speaker faces necessity to adjourn House

Puducherry: The lack of a quorum in the Territorial Assembly during a debate on demands for grants to certain departments including Sales Tax and Social Welfare Departments on Tuesday held up proceedings in the House. Puducherry Munnetra Congress legislator N. Anandhu was suggesting how to tone up the departments, when Deputy Speaker A.V. Sreedharan, conducting the proceedings, noticed that there were only eight members against a quorum of 10 legislators.

Mr. Sreedharan rang the bell to call the attention of the members to come into the House to restore quorum. But it did not evoke any response. He then adjourned proceedings for 10 minutes.

When the House reassembled, Speaker R. Radhakrishnan found that there was still a lack of quorum. Mr. Radhakrishnan subsequently adjourned the House until Wednesday morning.
