Advani's plea to Manmohan
New Delhi:
Senior BJP leader L.K. Advani has sought Prime Minister Manmohan Singh's intervention to ensure the safety of Indians in Uganda following the racial violence there last week. Mr. Advani spoke to Mr. Singh and expressed concern over the racial tension in Uganda, where a sizeable number of Gujaratis live. "He telephoned the Prime Minister and requested him that he should intervene to ensure the safety of Gujaratis," a source close to the former Deputy Prime Minister told PTI. Mr. Advani represents the Gandhinagar constituency in the Lok Sabha. "He also requested him that the Gujarat Government should be informed of the steps taken in this regard," the source said.
"The Prime Minister agreed with him [Advani] that the safety of Indians in Uganda was a matter of concern and promised his intervention," the source added.
Mr. Advani also spoke to a senior official at the Ugandan desk in the Ministry of External Affairs and asked him to keep the Gujarat Government informed about the steps taken for the safety of the community in that country. PTI
