Nagasaki mayor shot at

TOKYO: The mayor of Nagasaki, Japan, was shot at and wounded on Tuesday, and media reports said he was unconscious. Itcho Ito (61), was shot by a man in front of a train station. Japanese media said that Mr. Ito was taken to hospital after being shot twice in the back. Police arrested the assailant Tetsuya Shiroo (59), the ``acting head'' of a gang affiliated with Japan's largest organised crime syndicate, the Yamaguchi Gumi, reports said. The motive for the shooting was unclear but Kyodo news agency quoted police as saying the suspect had told them he had had ``trouble'' with the city over bidding for public works contracts. In 1990, then-mayor Hitoshi Motoshima was shot by a member of a right-wing group after making comments against the Emperor.
