Logistics Post to be extended

CHENNAI: Logistics Post, a daily overnight cargo service, will be extended to the Chennai-Madurai-Chennai sector on Thursday.

This will cover Chengalpattu, Tindivanam, Villupuram, Perambalur, Manaparai, Tiruchi and Dindigul, according to an official release on Tuesday.

Collector disburses relief to blast victims

VILLUPURAM: District Collector Brajendra Navnit distributed compensation to those who suffered damages to the property in the recent blast.

Towards meeting the initial expenses on repair works to 185 dwelling units, the Collector disbursed Rs. 14,45,750 by cheques. These included Rs. 2,000 each to 59 hut-dwellers, Rs. 25,000 each to eight tiled houses that suffered major damages, Rs. 2,33,250 to 30 partially damaged tiled houses, Rs. 50,000 each to six pucca houses with major damages and Rs. 5,92,500 to 82 partially damaged pucca houses. Besides this, the Collector also handed over a cheque for Rs. 2,000 to a person who had lost a sheep in the incident. — Special Correspondent

Ex gratia for kin of journalists

CHENNAI: Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi has sanctioned Rs. 2 lakh each as ex gratia for the kin of two senior journalists, who died in 2001 and 2004.

S. Mariappan, who worked in various dailies for 26 years before joining Makkal Seithi in Tirunelveli, died on March 24, 2001. D. Palraj, who worked with Dinakaran for 26 years, died on December 13, 2004. The amount has been released from the Chief Minister's Public Relief Fund, according to an official release.

As per the new scheme, in force since September 19, 2006, in the event of the death of a journalist having at least 20 years experience his family would get Rs. 2 lakh as ex gratia. It would be Rs. 1.5 lakh for those having at least 15 years of experience and Rs. 1 lakh for the kin of journalists of a minimum of 10 years' standing, it added. — Special Correspondent

Agreement reached on incentive scheme

SALEM: An agreement was reached between Salem Steel Plant management and Steel Plant Employees Union, Salem (CITU) to implement an Incentive Scheme with effect from March 1, 2007 during the bilateral talks held between them here recently. A statement said negotiations were held consequent to the demand raised by the union to revise the existing incentive scheme based on increased production. During talks, both the parties reached a settlement, which covered all categories of regular and eligible non-executive employees of the plant. — Staff Reporter

AIADMK to support fast

CHENNAI: General secretary of the AIADMK Jayalalithaa on Tuesday said her party would support the dawn-to-dusk fast to be observed in Madurai on April 25 to highlight demands of the Piramalai Kallar community. In a statement here, she said party activists including legislators would take part in the protest announced by All India Moovendar Munnani Kazhagam led by N.Sethuraman. — Special Correspondent

Three get jail term

PUDUKOTTAI: The Essential Commodities Court here on Tuesday sentenced three persons, Boloram (34) of Uttar Pradesh,S. Vicky (23) and R. Sureshkumar (27) both of Old Delhi, to undergo 10 years' rigorous imprisonment for possessing charas, a narcotic substance.

The trio, who were selling the narcotic substance at the Tiruchi Junction on July 21, 2004, were arrested by the Narcotics Investigation Bureau police personnel and 10.5 kg of charas, worth Rs 2 crore, was seized from them.

The Judge also ordered them to pay a fine of Rs one lakh each and in default to undergo one-year imprisonment.

Mettur level

TIRUCHI: The level in the Mettur dam stood at 76.62 feet against its full level of 120 feet on Tuesday. The inflow was 613 cusecs and the discharge from the dam was 2,000 cusecs. — Staff Reporter

UNICEF gesture

TIRUNELVELI: The Collector, G. Prakash, on Monday disbursed assistance from United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) to students of special schools run by National Child Labour Project (NCLP) in the district.

The UNICEF has donated double-line notebooks, stainless steel plates and tumblers to the children and water-filters to all special schools.

Valuables stolen

Tuticorin: Burglars broke into the house of Lakshmanan at Thattarmadom near here on Sunday and decamped with gold and silver articles worth Rs. 9,000. In another incident on the same day, gold ornaments worth Rs. 5,000 were stolen from the house of Periyasamy at Kulasekarapattinam near here.

Discount sale

TIRUNELVELI: The Tamil Nadu Handicrafts Development Corporation Limited, `Poompuhar,' has commenced discount sale.

Public can avail themselves of a discount of 10 per cent to 25 per cent for select products.

Demonstration

Nagercoil: Kani tribals from different parts of the district staged a demonstration in front of Collectorate on Tuesday seeking the Government to provide infrastructure facilities to their villages.

Man ends life

Nagercoil: A man committed suicide by hanging himself in a park near the sunset point in Kanyakumari on Tuesday. Police recovered the body and sent it for post-mortem. - Staff Reporter

Woman killed in accident

ERODE: A woman was killed in a road accident on Tuesday. According to the police, Revathy (20), wife of Vadivel of Vadakku Thayirpalayam near Kanjikoil, was walking on the road in the morning when a car hit her killing her on the spot. Kanjikoil police are investigating.

Forms distributed

ERODE: The district police administration has decided to provide learning licence (LLR) to all the police constables, the Superintendent of Police, Sonal V. Misra, has said recently.

Following this, 150 constables attached to the Armed Reserve and local police wings were distributed forms by the Additional Superintendent of Police, Jayanthy, on Tuesday. After training, they will be given driving licence by the Transport Department.

Ms Jayanthy urged the women constables to apply for LLR and get training as it would help them in future. The Deputy Superintendent of Police, K.M. Natarajan, was also present.

One killed, six hurt in collision

OMALUR: A woman was killed and six others sustained injuries when a private bus proceeding to Salem collided with a van here on Monday. Police said Kalaiyarasi (22) of Pottaneri, who was travelling in the bus and six others sustained injuries and were admitted to Salem Government Medical College Hospital. Kalaiyarasi died at the hospital.

Sentenced

SALEM: A Salem Court on Tuesday sentenced a person to life imprisonment on the charge of killing his nine-month-old son. According to the prosecution, Annamalai (41) of Taramangalam killed his son, Raja following a family dispute a few months ago. After hearing the arguments, the judge Suppuraj awarded life sentence to Annamalai.

Arrested

SALEM: The Salem City Police on Monday arrested five persons, including a 15-year-old boy, and recovered 77 sovereigns of jewellery and three motorcycles from them.

Police said the jewellery were stolen from houses in Sooramangalam and Fairlands areas. A special squad had been formed following incidents of robbery and housebreaking in these areas.

Held for storing explosives

NAMAKKAL: The Namakkal district police on Tuesday arrested two persons, who reportedly stored explosives without valid documents in a farmhouse at Jedarpalayam, near here. Police said that the Salem `Q' branch police seized 200 kg of gel-type slurry explosive sticks, boosters, explosive tubes and detonator fuse wire coils from a farmhouse recently.
