Madurai IT park gets the nod

Special Correspondent

Chief Minister to lay stone shortly

CHENNAI: Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi said on Tuesday that the State Government had accorded administrative sanction for establishing an IT park in Madurai district. Replying to N. Nanmaran, Whip of the Communist Party of India (Marxist), during the Question Hour, he said the 10-lakh sq. ft IT park area would be part of the 28.91-acre land at Ilandaikulam village in North Madurai taluk.

The land rights had been transferred. He will lay the foundation stone for the park after the remaining basic works are completed, Mr. Karunanidhi said.

All arrangements for establishing a second Tidel Park in Chennai had been more or less completed, he said.

On a plea for setting up IT parks in all the districts, including Tiruvarur, the Chief Minister said such hi-tech parks could be established only at places having harbour, transport and infrastructure facilities.

He said the proposed hi-tech park at Salem would be established before setting up a similar one in Nanguneri in Tirunelveli district.

Responding to a request for setting up of IT parks in southern districts so that the services of the unemployed software engineers in these areas could be utilised, Mr. Karunanidhi said the atmosphere was conducive for establishing IT parks in the State now, thanks to the concessions and facilities offered by the Government to investors.

During the last 10 months, nine memoranda of understanding (MoUs) were signed in the State, involving an investment of Rs. 8,485 crore. Projects to be set up with these investments would provide jobs for 1,21,540 persons including direct employment for 57,210, he said. While signing the MoUs, the Government had urged the investors to provide employment to the locals.
