Narayan Sahu
BERHAMPUR: Veteran weightlifter from the city Narayan Sahu has been selected manager of Indian weightlifting team that would take part in the Asian Weightlifting Championship-2007 to be held in Beijing from April 21 to 24. Felicitated On Saturday he was felicitated at the Veer Hanuman Circus and Physical Institute before he left for New Delhi to lead the national team. Mr Sahu is also the general secretary of the institute, which was established in 1944. The institute has produced several weightlifters of national acclaim, including Ranu Mohanty.President of the institute Raghunath Mohapatra said Sahu's exposure to international events would surely help the students who are being trained under him.
Good choice
After retiring from competitive weightlifting Sahu has used his time as a coach and organisational activities of the weightlifting associations. Mr Sahu is also joint secretary of the National Weightlifting Association and general secretary of the Orissa Weightlifting Association. Speaking to The Hindu , Mr Sahu said he would be taking an eleven member Indian team to Beijing and was hopeful of rich medal haul by the Indian participants. Ranjit Singh is the coach of the team. "We have selected best talent for the international event and the selected team has undergone rigorous training for the championship," he said.
