NEW DELHI: A special court at Patparganj dealing with electricity-related cases has sentenced two factory owners of Shahdara to two years' imprisonment or till the time they pay up their dues amounting to Rs. 4 lakh. Rajendra Kumar and Jagdish Singh were also directed by the court to pay penalties of over Rs. 88,000 and Rs. 3.3 lakh, respectively. Earlier during an inspection carried out by a BYPL enforcement team on June 13, 2003, both Rajendra Kumar and Jagdish Singh were allegedly caught stealing 5 KW and 18 KW of electricity, respectively, bypassing the electricity meter.
Meters disconnected
"Investigations into the case revealed that the BSES electricity meter at the site was lying disconnected. The duo had rented the premise from one Lekhi Ram. While Rajendra Singh was using the stolen electricity for electroplating metal parts, Jagdish Singh was using the stolen electricity for manufacturing auto parts," said a BSES official. Under the provisions of the Indian Electricity Act, 2003, power theft bills of Rs. 88,779 and Rs. 3.3 lakh were imposed on Rajendra Kumar and Jagdish Singh, respectively. Both the accused failed to pay up the fines. Subsequently an FIR was filed by BSES against the duo at the Gokulpuri police station. On May 2, 2006, BSES and the Delhi police jointly filed a case against the two accused in the special court.
