Four labourers killed, 41 injured as truck overturns

TRAUMATIC EXPERIENCE: Injured labourers being treated at MKCG Medical College Hospital in Berhampur on Tuesday.

BERHAMPUR: Four menial labourers, including three women of Panchama village of Ganjam district, were killed and 41 others were injured when the truck in which they were travelling overturned near Haripuram village near Itchapuram in Andhra Pradesh on Tuesday.

A pall of gloom descended on Panchama village about 20 km from here following the incident.

Initially the injured were admitted to hospital at Itchapur. Later, 20 of them had to be shifted to MKCG medical college of the city as their condition turned serious.

Three persons, who died on the spot, were identified as Tanu Pradhan, Pami Nayak and Paru Mandal.

One of the injured Bharati Pradhan succumbed to injuries at the MKCG medical college hospital.

Another injured Laxmi is fighting for her life as her condition is critical as per the doctors.

Financial aid

Berhampur sub-collector Ranjit Pradhan rushed to the medical college hospital to monitor the treatment of the injured. The cost of treatment is being borne by the Red Cross Society of the district. Mr Pradhan also announced financial assistance of Rs 5,000 to the family members of each of the labourers killed in the accident.

According to Pratima Pradhan and Minu Mandal, two of the injured, they were going to work at a brick kiln at Koligaon village near Itchapur. Around 200 landless labourers from Panchama village travel to the brick kilns in adjoining Andhra Pradesh every day. They are picked up by trucks at 8 am every day and return to village for a meager wage of 40 rupees per day.

On Tuesday at around 9.30 am a truck carrying 45 menial labourers from Panchama lost control and overturned on NH 5 near Haripuram .
