Comply with Section 144 of Indian Railway Act, 1989: Bench
|
KOLKATA:
The Calcutta High Court on Tuesday directed the railway authorities to ensure compliance with Section 144 of the Indian Railway Act, 1989, which prohibits unauthorised hawking on trains and platforms.
A Division Bench comprising Justices P.C. Ghose and B. Samaddar passed the order on a public interest litigation petition by Anjan Bhattacharya.
Admitting that the hawkers were illegally occupying platforms "on a permanent basis," the sources said the implementation of the provision in the Railway Act would require the cooperation of the Railway Police and the State Government.
