CHENNAI: Expressing displeasure at the failure of the police to investigate a complaint that the nine-year-old daughter of a tsunami-affected person was sexually assaulted by a neighbour, the Madras High Court has ordered a CB-CID probe into the matter. Wondering why the police had registered a first information report only on April 10 though the complaint was lodged on April 7, Justice K.N. Basha directed that the child be examined medically. The final report shall be filed within three months. The petitioner, living in a temporary shelter for tsunami victims at Eranavur, identified another resident of the colony as the offender. ] He stated that though he had approached the Ennore police station with a complaint on April 7, the police failed to take action. Later he was threatened into withdrawing the complaint, he said. However, after a petition was filed in the Madras High Court with the help of social activists, the Ennore police registered a case. Mr. Justice Basha, considering the circumstances under which the petitioner withdrew the complaint, besides the fact that the police had not handled the matter properly, directed the CB-CID to take up the investigation.
