TAMBARAM: Two classrooms of a government school in Tirusulam are being used as a godown to store colour television sets meant for free distribution under a State Government scheme. Some 1,500 television sets have been stocked in the classrooms of St. Thomas Mount Panchayat Union Middle School, Tirusulam, for over two months. With the classrooms turned into godowns, students until a few days ago attended classes and took their examinations on the verandah. With examinations and the academic year drawing to a close, the school has been working on two shifts for the past few days and the students have been accommodated once again in the classrooms. While welcoming the Government's fulfilment of its promise to supply free colour television sets to the people, the residents and parents in the area said that however, it was unfair to take over classrooms to store the television sets. As it is, there are no adequate classrooms to accommodate 860 students in the school, they said. Tirusulam village panchayat president A. Ramachandran said it had been intended to distribute the TV sets on March 31. However, the distribution work could not be done because of the Statewide bandh on that day, he said. Therefore, the distribution had to wait for the Assembly session to get over, he said. According to Mr. Ramachandran, there was no other place in the panchayat to stock the large number of television sets. He said that the television sets would be handed over at the earliest available opportunity. Additional buildings were under construction to accomodate more students at the school, Mr. Ramachandransaid that after the project was completed, ``we would put an end to the problem of shortage of classrooms'.
