CHENNAI : The Railway police handed over recovered properties valued at Rs 20 lakh to the owners here on Tuesday. Director General of Police D. Mukherjee handed over the properties in the presence of Southern Railway General Manager Thomas Varghese. Among the cases solved were the sensational dacoity committed by a gang of seven in December 2006 at Eraniel Station in Kanyakumari district in which the Station Master was tied up at knifepoint and his valuables and cash robbed. According to an official release, the special railway police teams arrested three people in connection with bag lifting cases reported at the railway stations in Chennai, Tiruchi and Tirunelveli districts. Over 1,000 IMFL bottles, 1.26 lakh sachets of arrack, 203 kilos of ganja and 40,000 kgs of PDS rice were also seized by the police, the release said.
Work commended
Mr Mukherjee commended the Railway police for recovering the properties. Mr. Varghese said the Southern Railway as part of its emphasis on passenger safety had earmarked Rs 5 crore for surveillance programmes. In the current financial year, it was planning to install hidden cameras and establish dog squads and bomb detection and disposal squads at important railway stations. Mr. Varghese also announced a token Rs 2,500 cash award to the Superintendent of Police Railways (Tiruchi) and Rs 1,000 cash award each to all policemen involved in the investigation leading to the recovery of the stolen properties. Inspector General of Police (Railways) I. Raja said 200 sovereigns of gold jewellery and Rs 1.09 lakh cash were recovered and 24 people were arrested. During 2006, the detection rate was 100 per cent and 90 per cent of the stolen properties were recovered. In 2007, out of the 32 cases registered up to March, 27 had been solved.
