Memorial pillar for blast victims

Special Correspondent

All-party committee makes the recommendation

  • Government jobs to be provided for educated kin of the victims
  • Free education, hostel accommodation for their wards

VILLUPURAM: A memorial pillar, with a plaque bearing the names of those killed in the Sendur explosion, will be erected at the blast site.

This was decided at a meeting of the all-party committee, headed by Collector Brajendra Navnit, here on Monday to decide on the quantum of compensation to the victims of the blast that claimed 16 lives.

After the meeting, the Collector told The Hindu that an upfront payment of Rs. 25,000 each would be made to owners of partially and fully damaged tiled and pucca houses. An initial payment of 75 per cent of the preliminary damage estimate would be given to those whose houses suffered minor damages.

    Assessment

After the Public Works Department officials finalise the assessment in a week's time, monetary assistance will be extended, depending on the progress of the works. (Initial survey had put the number of damaged houses at 187).

On rehabilitation of the victims' families, Mr. Navnit said government jobs would be provided for educated persons. Otherwise, assistance would be extended for taking up a suitable trade.

It was also proposed to give two milch animals each to the families of the dead.

Asked whether the compensation of Rs 1 lakh given to the families of the deceased was adequate, the Collector said the committee was of the opinion that it must be based on the age and status of the victims.

The committee had recommended the setting up of a Primary Health Centre at Sedur. At present, the residents were dependent on Government hospitals at Tindivanam and Vikkiravandi.

It had been decided to provide free education and hostel accommodation to the wards of the victims. Sendur had only a middle school, which would be upgraded high school.
